SPAN 318W In Sickness and in Health (taught in Spanish)
SPAN 318 combines advanced critical writing instruction in Spanish with the study of Hispanic cultural topics. In this particular section of the course we will read and discuss a range of literary and cultural texts from the Spanish-speaking world with a thematic focus on health and medicine, with particular attention to the ways in which notions of health and wellbeing, illness and disease, and therapeutic practices and beliefs are culturally constructed and situated. Our primary learning objective will be to appreciate how careful reading of literary and cultural texts provides insights into our experiences as patients, caregivers and practitioners. A secondary objective will be to appreciate more broadly how the humanities contributes to creating post-graduate pathways related to health and medicine (as part of a curricular sequence in Spanish that is now being developed). Taught in Spanish using Para vivir con salud
